Apex, Wake County, North Carolina Town Profile

Apex is a town in southwestern Wake County, North Carolina, with a 2007 estimated population of 31,453. A small portion of Apex extends further westward into Chatham County. Apex combines a relaxing small-town atmosphere with convenience to big-city amenities.

The town of Apex was incorporated in 1873, and named for its location at the highest point on the Chatham Rail Road between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. A devastating 1912 fire destroyed most of the downtown business district. The town center was rebuilt, and Apex is now one of the most intact turn-of-the-century-railroad towns in North Carolina. The revitalized downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Apex is conveniently located near several major highways: I-40, US-1, US-64, NC-55, and NC-751.

Apex's proximity to North Carolina's Research Triangle Park (RTP) has spurred residential development, and the town's population quadrupled in the 1990s, yet Apex has managed to preserve much of its small-town character.
