Pittsboro is in the heart of Chatham County, one of the fastest growing counties in North Carolina. Chatham County's population increased 13.7% between 2000 - 2006.

Pittsboro was founded in 1771, and established as a town in 1785. That same year, Pittsboro was officially named the county seat. Chatham County is named for William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, and Pittsboro is named for his son, William Pitt the Younger.


Many people moving to the Research Triangle area choose to live in Pittsboro and Chatham County because of lower tax rates compared to neighboring counties. Chatham County's property tax rate of 61.7 cents per $1,000 is the third lowest of adjoining counties, and is 57th in the state.

Chatham County has the 3rd highest per capita personal income ($38,426) in North Carolina (2007 figures).


Residents of Pittsboro embrace small town values of respect for one another and a strong sense of community. Its' people are a diverse group of artists and farmers, merchants and students, and it is home to the North Carolina Zen Center . It supports software developers, bio-fuel research and production, antique shops and art galleries. The scenic rural environment of Chatham County has attracted many artists' studios, and arts-related tourism is a growing economic influence.


Central Carolina Community College offers a core curriculum, as well as continuing education in such areas as Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Building Techniques.

Chatham County is the only county in North Carolina that has not had a decline in farms in recent years, and has more than 1,110 farms. The average farm in Chatham County is 105 acres. Chatham County ranks 1st in North Carolina in beef cows, 3rd in total cattle production, and 5th in broiler chicken production.


Pittsboro is ideally situated at the intersection of US 64 and Hwy 15-501. It is 16 miles to Chapel Hill, 25 miles to Research Triangle Park (RTP), and 32 miles to Raleigh. It is a short drive to recreation areas at Jordan Lake State Park (Jordan Lake has 100 miles of shoreline and is visited by 1-2 million people annually). Pittsboro is adjacent to the State's newest Natural Area - 960 acres along the scenic Haw River (one of three major rivers in Chatham County).
